Use Wifi To Make Calls With At&T Phones

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol is the technology that makes it possible to talk live via the Internet. Many cellular phones are wireless-Internet enabled. The Skype application provides a simple, user-friendly way to access VoIP to make user-to-user calls without using their AT&T airtime minutes. With a few easy steps and the right equipment, you can join the ranks of those who use Skype to make free calls over WiFi, or wireless fidelity Internet.

Instructions

Using Skype to Make VoIP Calls

1. Use your WiFi-enabled phone to connect to a wireless Internet connection. If the connection is secure, you may be prompted to enter a password to be allowed to connect.

2. Use your phone's browser to access Skype.com and follow the prompts to download and install the free Skype application. If you are using an Apple iPhone, open the App Store from the iPhone's main menu, press the "search" button, and enter "Skype" in the search field. Once you have located the Skype app page, press "install," and enter your Apple I.D. if prompted.

3. Locate and open the Skype app on your phone. Follow the prompts to create an account. You will be required to accept terms of service before you can proceed. Be prepared to enter your full name, create a username and password and provide a valid e-mail address.

4. Follow the prompts to place a test call. You will be asked to speak a message, which will be played back to you. If you can hear your message, your phone is configured correctly to use VoIP. If you cannot hear your message, you will be prompted to troubleshoot your phone's audio recording settings.

5. Locate the contacts menu within the Skype app. Use this menu to search your phone's directory, the Skype directory or manually add a phone number.

6. Select the contact you want to call and follow the prompts to make the call. Depending on the other person's settings, you may first be prompted to submit a request for permission to contact them via Skype.

Use Gps On Your Laptop

Combining the technologies of global positioning satellite, or GPS, systems and laptop computers can be done in several ways. The benefit of using your laptop is that you can take it anywhere you can take a laptop and the computer screen is larger and easier to see than the small screens of those GPS systems seen attached to car windows on the road.

Instructions

Ways to Use GPS on a Laptop Computer

1. Attach a laptop GPS receiver to your computer using either USB or serial cable connection. These receivers often come as part of a software bundle but can also be purchased separately. The receiver can then be placed in a position to allow for the clearest transmission of signals when displayed on the computer screen. The biggest advantage of using one of these receivers is the potential for interfacing the more expansive mapping capabilities afforded by the computer and Internet.

2. Attach a Bluetooth unit to take advantage of the wireless connection to allow a bit more flexibility for handling, such as passing the laptop to the back seat. The disadvantage to using Bluetooth over a GPS receiver is the expense, but it can be mounted nearly anywhere inside your vehicle and send data directly to the computer. Of course, you will be required to place an antenna on the dashboard or outside the car.

3. Attach a GPS receiver directly to the laptop using either a PCMCIA or compact flash, or CF, card. The more sophisticated of these cards also allow the addition of an external antenna for better reception. The use of one of the cards to connect the GPS system to the laptop is ideal for boats as well as cars.

4. Connect a microphone to the laptop or use the built-in microphone to make navigation even easier. Some GPS software will allow you to actually use voice commands such as asking how much farther to the next turn or whether you need to take a left or right. This provides added safety because you can keep your hands on the steering wheel.

Replace The Software For A Garmin System

The Garmin Corp. has created a simple, streamlined method for updating the software and firmware on any of its global positioning system (GPS) devices. Any Garmin device can be updated using Garmin's WebUpdater program, which detects information regarding the model, software and firmware installed on a Garmin GPS unit that is plugged into your computer via a USB connection. The program can search for upgrades that are appropriate for your GPS unit and will download and install all desired updates at the click of a button.

Instructions

1. Plug the USB connection cable that came with your Garmin GPS unit into the device. Plug the other end of the USB cable into a free USB port on your computer.

2. Open an Internet browser and load the Garmin WebUpdater download website. You will see several links that allow you to choose a version of the WebUpdater program that is compatible with your computer's operating system. Click on the appropriate link and left-click on the "Download" button on the next screen.

3. Read the Garmin Software Licensing Agreement. The licensing agreement indicates the terms of use that you must agree to in order to download and use the Garmin WebUpdater software. Click on the link that says, "I agree to the above terms." This will take you to a page that contains a link to the WebUpdater's installation file.

4. Left-click on the "Download" button. An executable installation file will now download onto your computer. Once the download is complete, run the downloaded file to install the WebUpdater program onto your computer.

5. Left-click the "Start" button on your desktop and navigate to the "Programs," then the "Garmin" sub-menu. Click on the WebUpdater icon to start the program. The Garmin WebUpdater will detect the model of the GPS unit that is connected to the computer. It will search the Garmin website for all software and firmware updates that can be applied to your GPS unit. Choose the updates that you would like to install; the WebUpdater program will download and automatically install the selected updates.

Unblock Phones For Free

Unblock phones for free to use with another wireless carrier.

If you are ready to switch to another wireless carrier, but you do not want to give up your phone and number, you can unblock the network on your device for free. To unblock most phones, you will need to obtain a SIM unlock code. The unlock code will remove the block on your device, which will enable you to have the phone activated with another carrier.

Instructions

1. Contact your wireless carrier from another phone other than you wireless device and ask the representative to provide you with the SIM unlock code for your phone.

2. Verify your wireless account and provide the representative with the international mobile equipment identifier (IMEI) number for your device, when prompted to do so. On some phone models, the IMEI number is located inside the battery compartment or you can dial *#06# to activate the IMEI menu to retrieve the number.

3. Wait for the representative to generate the unlock code for your device. Write the code down before you disconnect the call.

4. Power off your mobile phone and remove the SIM card. The SIM card is located inside the battery compartment. Insert another SIM card into the device that does not belong to the carrier that the phone was previously registered with.

5. Turn on your phone. Wait for the device to prompt you to enter the unlock code. Enter the SIM unlock code in the same manner that it was given to you by the representative. Wait for the phone to accept the code and restart. The device is now unblocked from its previous network. You can now activate the device with another carrier.

Cell Phone Codes & Tricks

Entering special codes on your key pad can provide unexpected functionality.

While your cell phone has a lot of handy built-in features, you may be unaware of some of its lesser known functions. Whether you want to disguise your phone number when making calls or shed some light in the dark, simple codes and tricks can extend the usefulness of your cell phone.

Secret Codes

To see the serial number of your phone, enter "*#06#" and hit the "Send" key. Your phone will then display the serial number (write down and save this number in case you ever call technical support and they ask for it).

To block your outbound caller ID, press "*67" before dialing a number. Restricting your outbound caller ID will cause "Unknown Number," "Restricted Caller" or "Private Number" to show on the recipient's screen rather than your phone number.

Many other codes are available but dependent on the model of phone that you have. Performing an Internet search for "Motorola phone codes" or "Nokia secret codes" can reveal a lot of unexpected functions that your device is capable of.

Power Cycling Trick

Turning your phone off and then back on once per day is an effective form of preventative maintenance. Cell phones are very similar to their computer counterparts and need to be periodically reset to work properly. Power down your phone by holding the red "End Call" key until it shuts off. Hold the key in once more to power the phone back up. Some phones have a dedicated power key, so look for this if the "End Call" key does not work.

Flashlight Trick

Because your cell phone gives off a lot of light from the display, it can be used a flashlight if necessary. Simply flip your phone open or activate the screen in the dark. If you are using an iPhone, BlackBerry or Android device, search the application store for programs that turn your phone's camera flash into a flashlight.

Get Free Cable Upgrades

During hard financial times, costly cable television packages seem like an expense that many can do without. However, you can use several methods in order to access free cable TV upgrades without limiting yourself to a basic package with no premium channels. Cable upgrades may include movie subscription channels, online access, sporting events and digital TV capabilities.

Instructions

1. Ask about your cable company's bundle packages. Most cable television companies offer cable, phone and Internet services for one low price. As a bundle package customer, you may be given free access to subscription movie channels along with your basic TV channels.

2. Sign up during a promotional period with your cable TV. Look for online and print advertisements that detail special offers to new customers. An offer could include a free trial period for movie subscription channels, sports events and more.

3. Contact your cable television company about possible free upgrades. Often, if you call your cable company and let them know that you are thinking about switching to another provider, they will offer you free upgrades to keep your business. The best time to do this is at the end of your introductory rate when you are no longer locked into a contract with the company.

4. Switch to a digital TV box. Your cable company can offer you numerous free upgrades when you own a digital TV set top box. Upgrades include interactive menus, movie rentals, parental control software and easy to navigate television guides. You can buy a box on your own or rent one through the cable company.

5. Find out about free online access to different cable TV features. Speak to your cable company about the opportunity to access programs online with your subscription package. You may also be able to control your DVR remotely and program it to record shows from your computer.

Si Joint Pain Exercises

SI joints, or sacroiliac joints, are the connecting point of the sacrum and the iliac bones. This area of the back is held together by ligaments and has very little movement in it. The SI joint connects the spine to the pelvis. This joint will take on the entire body weight when you stand. The stress of your weight can cause damage to this joint. SI joint damage can also be caused by inflammation, arthritis or hormones.

Treatment Options

When your SI joint begins to cause pain, there are several options for treatment. They include medications, injections, surgeries and physical therapy. There are also exercises that can be done to relieve pain or to prevent pain from occurring.

Exercises

Stretching that focuses on the hip area will be of great benefit to the SI joint. Begin by lying on the floor on your back. Bring one knee to the chest and hold for 2 seconds and release. Repeat 10 times for each leg.

Another exercise is to lie on the floor on your back and bend your knees with feet on the floor. Keeping your back firmly on the floor, move your knees as far as they comfortably can to each side. Work up to eight times each side.

Exercise 3: Lie on the floor on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Keeping your hips flat on the floor, spread your knees outward towards the floor. Then bring them together. Repeat eight to 10 times.

Finally, lie on the floor on your stomach and press your pelvis into the floor. Lift your upper body off the floor with your arms. Hold for 15 seconds and lower yourself back to the floor. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

Word of Caution

Be careful when performing exercises for the SI joint to not aggravate the condition by stretching too much or too far. Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program.

Transfer Photos From A Cell Phone To A Computer

If you want to more permanently save or more easily share your cell phone photos, you will want to transfer them to a computer. While some cell phones come with memory card ports like the LG-ENV or connect directly to a computer like a Blackberry, that doesn't help those of us with older models or today's under-$100 versions. Good news: There's a quick and simple way to transfer your photos, and you don't need anything other than your phone, computer and email address.

Instructions

1. Load up your photo library on your phone.

2. Move your cursor over the photo you want to transfer, and click "Send," or attach it to a text message.

3. A text message screen should pop up. In the box where you would normally enter a phone number, type out your full email address, and click send.

4. Log in to your email. Look for the email from an address that includes your cell phone number. For example, for Verizon Wireless, the email address will read yournumber@viewpix.com.

5. Download the photo to your hard drive. Repeat the process for all others you wish to transfer.

What Is A Packet

A packet in computer terms is not that dissimilar from a packet of paper documents, since both involve grouped information. Packets are made up of bytes (units of computer storage) of information. For example, if you email someone, the computer doesn't recognize the email as one entity, but rather in separate packets that consist of bytes. The transfer of packets over a network is called packet switching.

History

Donald Davies and Paul Baran are credited with the invention of packets and packet switching. Davies and Baran realized in the 1960s that sending information over a network would be much easier for computers and networks to handle if that information was in the form of smaller packets instead of one large block of information.

The invention of the packet by Davies and Baran laid the foundation for the way our modern PCs and networks handle and relay information.

Significance

Without packets and packet switching, the speed at which we are used to sending information over the Internet would decrease significantly.

The reason why packet switching is usually faster than if information was sent as one huge piece of data is because packets are easier for networks to read, interpret and then send.

Compare it to the way that we read novels. Few can read an entire novel in one sitting and still be able to retain, process and analyze all of the information. To make novels more readable, they are divided into chapters. In this way, we can read through a section of the book and, if we are interrupted or need to take a break, we can stop at the end of a chapter. When we return to the novel, we can begin at the next chapter instead of starting over from the beginning of the book.

Because data is sometimes lost while being transmitted over the Internet, the advent of packets allow our transfers to pick up at a certain "chapter" of the larger file, rather than starting over from the beginning of the entire transfer.

Function

All information relayed through a network is made up of binary code (combinations of 0's and 1's that take the form of data we see on a computer). Packet switching will take chunks (packets) of binary code and send them to their intended destination. When these packets reach their intended destination, the network will then put the packets together in the correct order.

Types

"Packet" is the most common word used to refer to chunks of information sent over a network, but you might also see or hear them referred to as "frames," "blocks," "cells" or "segments." Even though the word may differ, the function is the same.

Packets are usually divided into three main parts:

Header--The information contained in the header carries instructions about the data within the packet, i.e. length, packet number, origination and destination.

Payload, or body--The payload, or body, of a packet contains the actual data that comprises the packet, i.e. part of a message or image. The bulk of the packet is contained within the payload or body.

Trailer, or footer--The trailer, or footer, tells the final destination device (i.e. your mom's computer) that the packet has ended.

Considerations

Although packet switching is a generally safe and reliable way of transmitting information, people should be aware of how files can become corrupted.

Packet switching divides a large piece of data such as an email into several smaller pieces of data. Because a network now has several different packets to transmit, there is a greater chance that one of these packets can become lost or misinterpreted during transmission, resulting in an incomplete piece of data.

There are different ways a packet can become lost or misinterpreted. Every once in a while a glitch in your network can completely miss a packet that is being sent, resulting in the loss of that packet. Also, a network may misread a packet and interpret it in a way other than the way it was originally intended. These problems are rare, but if you receive or transmit data over a network and an error occurs, then chances are the problem is with one or more packet(s). Because most files are complex, an improperly transmitted or missing packet will corrupt the entire file. If this happens, it is best to try to delete the file and re-download it.

Finally, one of the biggest problems with packets is that it is much easier for a virus to attach itself to an individual packet than it is to one large piece of data. This is because viruses are more obvious to your security software or firewall when they are part of a larger piece of data than a smaller one. Because of this problem, the makers of anti-virus software have added extra virus protection to standard security software. However, this extra protection can sometimes be a double-edged sword when it comes to packet switching, because sometimes security software will identify a virus in a packet when there is none at all, resulting in loss of some data.

Record A Phone Conversation

Some smartphones feature call recording apps.

Recording phone conversations is useful if you are conducting phone interviews or meetings that will require you to reference the conversation later. Standard audio recorders usually do not produce high-quality phone recordings, so specialized equipment can help you reach the call quality you need. Before you record, check the laws regarding phone conversations in your state. Some states allow you to record phone calls if only one party, generally yourself, knows about the recording, while other states require that you inform the other party of the recording and get consent to record. If you intend to broadcast the conversation, the FCC requires that you receive consent from the other party for recording.

Instructions

1. Connect a commercial telephone recording device to the phone you plan to use for the conversation. This device may be a tape recorder with special cables that place it in line with the phone cords, or it may be a cable that hooks into your computer and uses computer audio software to make the recording.

2. Call a friend or family member to test your recording device. Even if your state does not require consent from the other party, let the state know you are recording as a courtesy.

3. Play back the audio from your test call and make any adjustments necessary. If your plan is to record an incoming call, ask a family member or friend to call you to test out the equipment on an incoming call too.

4. Confirm your equipment is running and conduct the call you want to record, such as an interview or meeting. Inform the other party about the recording if necessary or simply as a courtesy if it is not necessary in your state. Recording state-to-state calls always requires consent.

Open A Locked Cell Phone

Every cell phone you buy from a carrier like Verizon or AT&T is locked into that service via a SIM card. But with a bit of knowledge, it is possible to unlock your phone for use with any carrier, or even overseas. Some phones are easier to unlock than others, and there are services that offer to unlock your phone for a fee. Read below for some basic tips on unlock different models, or find services that will do it for you.

Instructions

1. If you have been with your service provider a long time or are at the end of your contract, call customer service and ask for the key code to unlock your phone. If they ask why, tell them you need to be able to use your phone overseas. Or say you bought a locked phone off of eBay and would like to unlock it. Speak to a manager if needed.

2. For older phones, especially Nokias, it is possible to search for unlocking code generator software. Some may be free; others may require a small fee. Follow the steps provided by each software provider, as they can differ. At the site GSM Unlock, you'll find software for Nokia, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony. (Follow the link in Resources.)

3. Newer phones usually require hardware and software to unlock the SIM card. A special cable and unlocking software, found online, will typically run you $15 to 50. Lots of help is available at a forum called Cellphone Hacks.com. (See Resources.)

4. To access the unlock codes for Motorola phones, you have to disassemble the phone and drill into the main shield to access circuits and put the phone into a diagnostic mode. It would probably be wise to have this done by a professional service, such as the one provided by The Travel Insider. (See Resources.)

5. Samsung phones require a certain type of software, which can be pricey ($200). It's probably best to send your phone to an unlocking service like Travel Insider, which is much cheaper.

6. Search for companies that provide unlocking services if you feel it is necessary. Compare their prices and services. Some can do it remotely, while others require you to send in your phone. It runs anywhere from $15 to $50, depending on the complexity of the phone. PC Magazine lists Howard Forums as a good site for finding links to various unlocking services. (See Resources.)

Change The Ringtone On The Iphone

Change the Ringtone on the iPhone

Like the majority of modern cellular phones, the iPhone gives users the ability to change the ringtone to almost any sound they would like. Depending on your personal preference, you can use a variety of default ringtones provided with the purchase of the iPhone or create your own from purchased songs. Simply review a few straightforward guidelines before you begin to change the ringtone on your iPhone.

Instructions

1. Set ringtones to play alerts related to different occurrences on your iPhone. Tap on the "Sounds" icon in the Settings menu and review the list of different instances where a ringtone can be set to play, clicking "On" or "Off" next to each to adjust the controls. This list includes receiving a call, a text message, voicemail or email message, as well as sending an email message or reminding you of an event on your calendar.

2. Tap on the "Ringtone" icon in the "Sounds" menu to see a list of your available ringtones. The default ringtones available to you on the iPhone are generic ringing and beeping sounds. Tap on any of these sounds to change your settings to play it as your primary ringtone.

3. Purchase ringtones from the iTunes Music Store. Ringtones cost the same price as regular songs in the store's catalog and may be up to 30 seconds in length. Not all songs can be converted to ringtones, though you can find out which are eligible by looking for a small bell-shaped icon next to the title in the store's listings.

4. Use the small switch located on the side of the iPhone to turn the ringtone on or off for the entire iPhone. This switch has 2 options, either to set the phone to "Ring" or "Silent." The switch is designed so that you can tell if it is on or off simply by feeling it, as the switch will be lined up with the volume buttons when it is on "Ring" and will be out of line when it is on "Silent."

5. Set the iPhone to vibrate, either with or without a ringtone, when you receive a call. Tap on "Sounds" in the Settings menu to view the available "Vibrate" options for both "Silent" and "Ring" mode. You will need to turn it on or off for each ringer mode.

6. Assign a specific ringtone to individual contacts in your iPhone. Choose a contact from your "Contacts" menu by tapping on it and then tap on "Ringtone" to see a list of available ringtones. The ringtone you tap on from the list will play every time that contact calls your phone.

7. Choose a ringtone to play as an alarm on your iPhone. You can select the specific ringtone you would like to play by taqpping on the "Alarm" icon in the "Sound" menu. This menu also gives you the option to set the "Snooze" feature to on or off, which will stop the alarm for 10 minutes then play the ringtone again when it is set to on.

Unlock An Lg C3310 Phone

Unlocking your LG 3310 phone gives you the option to use alternative service providers.

Unlock A Nokia 6125

By unlocking your Nokia 6125 mobile phone, you can connect it to any network you want instead of being locked to one network. You need an unlock code for this, which you can try to obtain by contacting your phone's provider. If that does not work, you can buy one from a third-party website. You need to know your phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number for both cases.

Instructions

1. Find your 6125's IMEI number. Do this by typing "*#06#" on the keypad, which causes the IMEI number to appear on the screen.

2. Call your phone's provider, give your phone's IMEI number and ask for an unlock code. If the representative refuses to give you a code, go to a website that sells unlock codes (see Resources), give your IMEI number and purchase a code.

3. Remove the battery pack from the back of the phone, then remove the phone's subscriber identity module (SIM) card. The phone must be off while you do this.

4. Turn the phone on and enter "#pw+CODE+1#" on the keypad, where "CODE" is the unlock code provided to you by the customer service representative. Press the "*" button three times quickly to make "p" appear on the display and press "*" four times quickly to make "w" appear on the display. Press "*" two times quickly to make "+" appear.

5. Look for the message "SIM Restriction Off" to appear on the display. The phone is unlocked.

Unlock A Nokia 2310

Unlock your Nokia 2310

Cell phone network providers install SIM locks on some Nokia handsets to prevent you from using the phone with rival networks. Fortunately, there are online cell phone unlocking websites that can help you unlock your Nokia 2310 to use with a SIM card from any carrier.

Instructions

1. Find out your Nokia 2310's IMEI number, a 15-digit serial number for your individual handset. Dial "*#06#*" on your phone and you'll see the serial number. If you see more than 15 digits, just write down the first 15 digits of the code (without dashes or spaces). The other digits are not a part of the IMEI number.

2. Visit a website that provides unlock codes for your Nokia 2310. Links to some websites are provided in Resources below. Some websites provide the service for free while others charge a fee. Keep in mind that unlock codes from free services do not necessarily work and you risk locking your phone permanently.

3. Fill out the form at the code unlocking website. You'll be asked for your cell phone's IMEI number, network provider, cell phone model (in this case, Nokia 2310) and your email address. The website will then generate a series of unlock codes for your phone. If you're paying a fee, you'll receive one unlock in your email.

4. Remove the existing SIM card and insert one from another service provider. You will be asked for the unlock code. Type the unlock code you obtained from the website. The phone will then show "SIM Restriction Off."

Replace A Power Window Motor & Regulator

You will need to remove the door panel to access the power window motor and regulator.

Power windows have four components: the switch, the motor, the regulator and the window-support. The motor provides the power which is channeled through the regulator to move the window up or down according to the position of the switch. If the motor or regulator fails the window will not move, or will move slowly. Find the motor and regulator that match your car's make and model exactly so it will fit correctly inside the door.

Instructions

1. Remove the window switch. Each car is slightly different, so use care and consult your car repair manual if necessary. Pry the cover off the switch mount off using gentle, even pressure. It may be screwed in place, so don't force it. Locate any screws or bolts that hold the switch in place and remove them. Unplug the switch by pinching the plastic connector and wiggling it free.

2. Pry off the separate plastic panels on the door. You know they can be pried off if you can see the plastic all the way around with no mounting screws or screw covers. Look for circular plastic pieces that cover mounting screws or bolts. Remove all the mounting screws or bolts and lift off the door panel.

3. Pull out the door insulation. This can be laid on the door panel so you know reinstall it later. Be careful to not rip or damage the insulation during removal.

4. Tape the window in place with masking tape so that it doesn't slide down while you're working. Remove the mounting bolt for the motor and unplug the motor from the electrical system. Press the tabs on the plastic plug and wiggle the plug free to disconnect the motor.

5. Remove the mounting bolt for the regulator rail and remove the window regulator. Disconnect the motor cable from the window regulator. Note the position and orientation of the regulator so you can install the replacement correctly.

6. Mount the new regulator in the door. Tighten the bolt. Reconnect the motor cable. Mount the motor and tighten the mounting bolt. Remove the masking tape. Plug in the switch and turn the key in the ignition to the "On" position (do not turn the engine on). Test the motor with the switch. The window may have settled in the tracks, nudge the window as necessary to align it correctly as it moves up and down.

7. Remove the switch. Replace the insulation. Make sure you still have free access to the bolt-holes for mounting the door panel. Replace the door panel and tighten the bolts. Plug the switch back in and replace the plastic covers that you pried off. Use gentle, even pressure to pop the plastic pieces back in place.

Why Do Sim Cards Permanently Disable

Subscriber Identity Module or SIM cards have a security lock that prevents unauthorized use. These cards will permanently disable when you're unable to unlock the security lock. SIM cards are used in Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM phones. SIM cards can be moved from one GSM phone to another on the same or a different network. Once permanently disabled, the cards are rendered useless for security reasons.

SIM Card Lock

Many GSM phones include a SIM card security that allows you to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the cards content. The security also prevents the card from being used with other phones on the same wireless network or with a different network. When you enable the SIM card lock, a previously created PIN must be entered when you turn on the phone. The SIM PIN can contain four or more characters that can include numbers or alphanumerical depending on the phone.

Temporily Disables

To protect your SIM card, many wireless providers allow a limited number of incorrect SIM PIN entries. The number varies with different phones; however, if you enter the incorrect PIN a several times, the phone temporarily locks. The number of times varies depending on the phone. When the phone locks, you must enter the PIN Unlock Key or PUK code to unlock the device. The PUK code is usually located on the SIM card's documentation. If you can't find the code, some wireless providers allow you to retrieve the code using your online wireless account through a process called "Unblocking." If you don't have an online wireless account, contact your wireless provider. When you enter the PUK code, the phone's SIM card is unlocked automatically.

Permanent Disable

If you enter the PUK code incorrectly too many times, the SIM card will be permanently disabled. The number of times varies with different wireless providers. However, wireless providers such as AT&T and T-Mobile that both use SIM cards will permanently disable SIM cards if you enter the incorrect PUK code 10 times or more. The PUK code is designed to give you a second chance at unlocking the SIM card. However, the more times you enter it incorrectly, it's assumed that someone is tampering with your SIM card, which is why it's disabled after several failed attempts.

Tips

If the SIM card is permanently disabled, unfortunately, it cannot be reactivated or used. You must contact your wireless provider for a replacement card. Some wireless providers such as T-Mobile allow you to purchase replacement SIM cards directly from their website. Some of the replacement SIM cards are ready for use as soon as you insert them into the phone. However, some wireless providers will require you to activate a replacement card.

Transfer Mobile Contacts

Backing up your mobile contacts

Most people these days use their cell phones for more than just making phone calls. They often act as our business centers, containing important information like contacts, presentations, text messages, and even photographs and videos. Most people don't take the time to back up their phones, either, and risk losing everything if they are lost or stolen. However with a small, inexpensive device you can back up your mobile contacts and all of your other information in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

1. Get a cell phone data extractor (see the Resources section). These are devices that can take information from your phone while plugged into the USB port of your computer. You can download anything on the phone, whether it's contacts, old messages or business presentations.

2. Insert the CD-Rom from the data extraction kit into the appropriate drive on your computer and follow the instructions on the screen.

3. Take out the SIM card from your phone by removing the battery and lifting up the metal gate containing the white rectangular-shaped card. This is where your phone's memory is stored.

4. Insert the card into the reader and plug it into the USB port on your computer.

5. Open up the application by going to the "Menu," finding the program and clicking on it. When it starts, it will automatically find the data extractor and begin reading the files on it.

6. Download your contacts by going to "File" and selecting "Download Contacts." The program creates a folder for all of your contacts and the date that they were saved. They are now backed up.

Choose The Best Webcam To Use With Skype

Choosing the best webcam for Skype is pretty much the same as getting the most webcam for your money in general. Skype recommends using their video call and video conferencing software, which will work with any webcam. Follow these steps to choose the best webcam to use with Skype.

Instructions

1. Consider your budget. No program is going to deliver pristine video, so do not overspend. An excellent webcam can be found for as low as $50 and a merely functional one can be bought for less than $20.

2. Look for good resolution. Most webcams will have either 320 x 240 or 640 x 480. Megapixels are for stills and have little effect on video.

3. Understand frame rate. Thirty frames per second is typical and will deliver a good picture.

4. Look for extra features. Pan, tilt and manual focus are features that will let you frame the best shot. These features are particularly useful when you do not have a lot of space at your computer desk or workstation.

5. Get a glass lens. Glass is better than plastic in lenses.

6. Make sure your computer can handle a webcam. Most webcams have minimum system requirements listed on the box, so know your computer's specifications and read the box before buying.

7. Make sure that the cables are included with the webcam, and that your computer supports the camera's connections.

Nokia N76 Bluetooth Problems

Introduced in 2007, the Nokia N76 is a thin flip phone with a generous display, web browser and 2-megapixel camera. It is was first released overseas and became available in the U.S. shorty after. Despite its positive features, the N76 has numerous connectivity issues, including poor Bluetooth capabilities. The phone's major Bluetooth problem is its lack of Bluetooth stereo.

Bluetooth Stereo

Although the Nokia N76 has Bluetooth 2.0, it does not support A2DP, which allows users to listen to Bluetooth stereo. Lack of Bluetooth stereo means users have to utilize traditional wired headphones. A Mobile Burn review indicated that the lined headphones are troublesome because the phone's hinge cannot close properly when they are connected.

Bluetooth Range

Although the European version of the N76 runs on the 3G network, the U.S. version is only capable of 2G. Due its 2G connectivity, the phone's Bluetooth does not have as wide of a range compared to 3G. Problems with 2G range are not as noticeable if you stay within a few feet of your phone.

Bluetooth Reception

The 2G capabilities also affect the N76's Bluetooth reception quality. PC Magazine and CNET reviews reported background noise when using the Bluetooth headset. Reception also depends on the quality of Bluetooth headset you use. CNET indicated that the Nokia BH-801 headset is sub-par when used with the N76 in windy conditions, while the Logitech Mobile Traveler performed better.

Disable Voicemail On An At&T Razr

Disable Razr voicemail by contacting AT&T.

AT&T offers voice mail to customers with Motorola Razrs for little to no charge. This allows subscribers the ability to receive audio mail from callers. The subscriber can then call the voice mail to hear the message left by callers This feature is helpful for people who cannot access their phones at all times, but may be bothersome for people who do not have a need for it.

Instructions

1. Press and hold the 1 button on your cellular phone keypad. It should begin dialing a number that appears on your screen or will otherwise only show a 1. If the 1 shows, you do not have a voice mail number programmed into your phone and it is likely you do not have voice mail.

2. Listen to the phone call message to determine whether it connects you to your voice mail inbox. If it connects, then you are a voice mail subscriber. It will likely connect you to AT&T or tell you that the service is not available otherwise.

3. Back up important voice mail if your voice mail service is activated. You can back these messages up by using an external recording device, such as a voice recorder, and holding it up next to the phone as it plays. When you deactivate your voice mail service and decide to access it later, your previous voice mails will no longer be available.

4. Contact AT&T by dialing the customer service phone number, 800-331-0500, or pressing 611 from your Razr. You can email the company directly through your online AT&T account or visit a local retail store as well. Express your interest in removing the voice mail service from your Motorola Razr or verify that your service is not active. Once you verify that the service is on the account, the representative will deactivate it for you.

5. Verify that the voice mail service is off your account by pressing and holding your power button down to turn off your phone. Turn the phone back on and wait for it to connect to AT&T. Hold the 1 button down until it connects you to your voice mail. Listen for the voice mail greeting or the error message. You can additionally check by dialing your Motorola Razr number from a different phone. You should not hear your voice mail message, but rather continuous ringing.

Improve The Reception On Vodafone 3g Broadband

Using your cell phone service provider to access 3G broadband is an excellent way of taking advantage of your laptop's connectivity. Vodafone, the world's largest cellular phone operator as of November 2010, offers a range of 3G packages to suit most budgets and needs for customers in Britain. But there are areas that do not have the best coverage, whether because of the cellular phone mast or obstructions in the surrounding area.

Instructions

1. Open your web browser and visit Vodafone's UK coverage map. Tap in your postcode or place name and hit the "Check Coverage" button. You will be presented with a map that shows the coverage for that area. You may find that the area you are in only has variable coverage. If you can move, relocate in a higher-coverage area.

2. Use a clip aerial from Vodafone or another cellular phone outlet. This clips onto the side of your laptop or can be placed on your desk. These usually can then be plugged straight into your 3G broadband dongle.

3. Use a high-gain 3G directional aerial from Vodafone or other cellular phone outlet. The high-gain aerial is directional, and thus needs to be pointed toward the nearest cellular phone mast. To find one, simply rotate the aerial until you see the maximum signal coverage on the bar readout.

The Pros & Cons Of Flip Phones

Flip phones are durable, simple tools that may be the choice for you.

With the emergence of new styles of phones, flip phones are quickly becoming relics of the past. Despite the showy touchscreen and sliding phones that are flooding the market, flip phones offer some basic advantages because of their simplicity in design. If you can't decide whether to purchase a flip phone or a touchscreen phone, there are some things to consider before making your choice.

Keypad Protection

If you're tired of constantly "pocket dialing" random contacts from your address book, you may be interested in changing to the retro flip phone. Unlike touchscreen and sliding phones, which always have keyboards or controls exposed and can sometimes bounce around in a pocket or purse at just the right angles to dial that friend you don't really talk to, flip phones physically fold to protect the keyboard from any unwanted use.

Screen Protection

If you have a new touchscreen phone, you might be a little bit paranoid that the screen will break if you drop it, or that it will scratch if it collides with something in your purse or pocket. The flip phone folds to cover the screen when it is not in use, giving the screen and keypad a durable shell that is less likely to be punctured or broken if dropped.

Price

Because the flip phone is a style from the past, you can generally find them for at least 100 dollars less (at the time of publication) than the new generation of sliding or touchscreen phones. Most cell phone companies offer flip phones for free or little cost with the purchase of a plan. If you're looking for a way to save money, the flip phone is the choice for you.

Wear and Tear

The only potentially weak part of the flip phone is its hinge, which suffers wear and tear with heavy use. Unlike touchscreen phones, which have no physical moving parts, the flip phone's hinge can loosen or crack over time. If the phone is opened quickly or forcefully, the hinge can break, leaving you with the chore of replacing the phone.

Blast from the Past

Because flip phones are out of style at the time of publication, it is difficult to find a flip phone with all of the bells and whistles of new touchscreen phones. Although many flip phones are designed to surf the internet, the screens are often too small to clearly read. The keypad can also be difficult to use as a navigation tool. If you're looking for a phone that can surf the internet with ease, a larger touchscreen phone or phone with a full keyboard might be the better choice.

Reformat A Windows Vista Computer

Reformatting erases all files and other data on the hard drive.

Reformatting a hard disk drive is something that most PC users will have to do sooner or later. After the drive has been formatted, you will have to reinstall the Windows operating system. While the task may seem daunting, it can be accomplished in just a few steps once you know the procedure. Be aware that reformatting a hard drive erases all data on the disk, so back up your important files, if possible, before you begin this process.

Instructions

1. Create a set of recovery discs, if you don't have these available. You will need these discs to reinstall Windows Vista, if you don't have an installation CD. Many computers are no longer sold with CDs; instead, the recovery discs are copied to a partition on the hard drive, which saves the manufacturer a dollar or two on materials. Make a set of backup disks at the earliest opportunity so you can reinstall the OS if your PC becomes infected with a virus or suffers a catastrophic system failure.

2. Click on the Windows "Start" menu and type "recovery" in the "Start Search" area. Click on "Recovery Disk Creation" in the search results and follow the on-screen prompts. You'll need three blank DVDs or seven CDs to create a set of recovery disks. If you have your Windows Vista installation CD, you can skip this step and go on to the next.

3. Insert the Windows Vista recovery disc in the computer's optical drive.

4. Turn off the computer and then restart it. As the computer reboots, a screen should appear asking whether you want to boot from the hard drive or the CD/DVD. Choose the latter and follow the on-screen prompts. Make sure you opt to reformat the drive and not recover it.

Replace A House Foundation Sill Plate

Replace a House Foundation Sill Plate

Is the sill plate on your wood frame house rotten or damaged? Keep in mind that replacing a sill plate on your house is not as scary of an undertaking as most homeowners originally think. With some preparation and patience, any do-it-yourself homeowner can tackle this project in one weekend.

Instructions

1. Gather the necessary tools and materials, then excavate down to undisturbed earth near your home's foundation. Make sure not to dig under your foundation at all, as that could create a cracked foundation wall. You will be placing four jacks to a wall so you will need a total of 16 holes dug under the house for this project. To provide the right amount of workspace around the sill plate, place the jacks at least 24 inches back from the sill plate itself on a solid floor joist. This gives a solid foundation for the lift.

2. Place the the 24-inch square laminated lumber on the ground. A block is then placed on this solid base, followed by the jack, a piece of 4x4 lumber and, finally, a steel plate. The laminated lumber spreads the load of the jack across a larger area, while the 4x4 post provides a solid base for the floor joist to sit on. The steel plate then spreads the load across a larger area on your floor joist, protecting it from damage. You will use this same setup for each jack on each of the four walls.

3. Slowly begin lifting the house once the jacks are placed. This is the most time-consuming part of the process because you want all of the jacks to lift at the same rate to keep the house level. The ground underneath each jack will also compress somewhat as the jack takes the weight of the house. Sometimes this means that a jack's height will need adjusted to ensure it is always bearing its share of the weight. You can adjust jack height and position by paying meticulous attention to the condition of each jack and building up jack supports when appropriate. Take your time with this part of the process and remember that you only need between 8 to 10 inches of room between the bottom of the house and the foundation wall itself.

4. Remove the old, damaged sill plate and replace it with a new one. Because there is not a solid piece of lumber that can run the entire 30- to 40-foot length of one side of a house, splice two shorter pieces together. Your best option is to find two 22-foot-long pieces of 8-inch square oak lumber, connecting them together via a 24-inch lap joint and lag screws. The sill plate is then cut to length and secured in place between the foundation wall and the frame of the house. This is easier said than done, as cut-outs for each floor joist will need to be made so the sill plate fits snugly and securely on the bottom of the house.

5. Slowly and meticulously lower the house back into position once the sill plate is securely fitted to the bottom of the house and has been lagged bolted into place. Replace any siding that was removed, and remove the jacks themselves. If all goes well, your new sill plates will have leveled up your historic home and will provide years of protection from a sagging floor.
