A Printer Driver

Keep your PC's printer in working order by updating the printer's driver.

Drivers allow a hardware device, such as a printer or scanner, to communicate with the other components of your Windows-based computer. Physically a driver is made up of a set of files that act together. Sometimes these drivers become corrupted, causing the printer to not function properly or not respond and causing on-screen errors to appear. Also, the addition of devices to your computer may require updating a printer's driver. Printer drivers may be updated using tools already loaded on the machine.

Instructions

1. Click the "Start" button on the Windows 7 desktop. Click on "Devices and Printers" in the list of options to bring a new window into view. This window displays all printers installed for use with this PC.

2. Right click on the name of the printer for which you wish to update drivers. Select "Printer Properties" in the menu that appears.

3. Click the "Advanced" tab inside the Printer Properties window. Select the "New Driver" button to activate the "Add Printer Driver Wizard."

4. Click "Next" in the Add Printer Driver Wizard window. Select the "Yes, This Time Only" option and press "Next."

5. Click the "Install the Software Automatically" option from the list of options. Accept the choice by selecting the "Next" button. The Add Printer Driver Wizard searches the Internet and the computer for the newest driver for the printing device. After locating the appropriate driver, the wizard installs the driver automatically.
