Internet phone options have become more popular and widespread in recent years. Many homes are deciding to forgo a land line, looking for a cheaper alternative to traditional phone service while also having the comfort of a home phone line. Voice Over Internet Phone, cable phone and other alternatives are affordable and reliable.
VOIP
VOIP service, or Voice Over Internet Phone service, is available from various Internet phone companies. This service uses a traditional phone jack to supply the phone service to the phone of your choice, while transmitting from a modem attached to the Internet connection of the home. VOIP service is an economical choice but can be as high as traditional monthly phone service each month.
Magic Jack
Magic Jack is an Internet phone service that plugs your standard phone into your computer using a small jack. This allows the phone to be used as a traditional phone, while also offering the economic freedom of Internet phone options. This service is paid yearly for a small fee, much lower than a traditional phone service. Magic Jack will only work while the computer is on and there is an Internet connection. A broadband connection is recommended for best call clarity.
Skype
Skype uses the Internet connection to allow for a personal phone conversation without the use of a traditional telephone. A USB headset is plugged into the computer ports to allow for conversation. The use of a web cam can also allow for the parties to see each other.
Broadband
Cable companies offer telephone service as part of Internet package bundles. This phone service uses the modem that enables Internet service and the cable lines to supply a phone connection to the regular phone jacks in the home. This service is reliable, except in areas where power supply issues are a problem. When the electric or Internet service is unavailable, the phone system will not work.
