Reformat A Phone Memory Card

Start over by refomatting your memory card.

Smart phones usually come with the feature to expand their internal memory using external memory cards, or SD cards. An SD card is also an excellent way also to take your media from phone to phone. Sometimes, however, problems arise and you may need to reformat your card. Or possibly you just want to start afresh with your card. You can make your SD card like-new again in less than 5 minutes.

Instructions

1. Consult your phone's user guide. There may be a way to format your card directly from your phone. This is usually the best option to take.

2. Eject your card from your phone. Most phones have options within the menu to safely eject the card. Always safely eject to avoid permanent damage to the card.

3. Insert the card into your computer. You may need an external SD card reader if your computer does not come equipped with one built-in. You may also need a Micro-SD to SD adapter if your cell phone uses Micro-SD cards. These can be found at your local electronics store.

4. Open "Computer" from your desktop. You will see an icon for your memory card. It will read "Removable Disk" or "Secure Digital Storage Device." Right click on the icon an choose "Format." Leave the settings as they are and click "Start." Once complete, you can safely eject the card from your computer by right-clicking the "Safely remove hardware" icon and choosing "Eject SD Memory Card."

5. Replace the memory card back into your phone and begin using it. Your phone may prompt you to format it again when inserted. Do this as this will format it to your phone's file structure.
