An unlocked Nokia 5500 will be compatible with any SIM (subscriber identity module) card regardless of the network provider offering it. This will allow you to enjoy promotional deals from a rival network carrier. Moreover, unlocked Nokia phones have a higher resale value as compared with locked ones.
Instructions
1. Make sure you have the necessary information before you contact a company that generates cell phone unlock codes. You must know the network your phone is currently locked to and your phone's IMEI (mobile equimpment identification) number. You can find out the IMEI number by typing *#06# on the phone's keypad.
2. Purchase the unlock code from a company like GSM Liberty, Unlock All Cellular or Cell Corner (see Resources). Depending on the network your Nokia 5500 is locked to, you should be able to get the code for somewhere between $11.99 and $65.90 (as of September 2010). Upon making the payment with a credit card, you will receive the code in your email inbox.
3. Turn on your Nokia 5500 without a SIM card inside.
4. Type, #PW+CODE+1# (where "CODE" is the unlock code you purchased in Step 2). Your phone should now show you the message, "SIM Restriction Off." If it doesn't show this message, try the alternative method of entering the code given in Step 5.
5. Type, #PW+CODE+7#. Your Nokia 5500 will then be unlocked.
