Transfer Using Bluetooth

Add Bluetooth technology to your PC with a USB adapter.

Bluetooth is wireless technology to connect devices in order to, for example, send or receive files, connect to the Internet or use wireless headsets. Most current cell phones and laptops have Bluetooth built-in, or you can buy a Bluetooth adapter that plugs in to the USB port of your computer. It's quick and easy to use Bluetooth to transfer photos from your camera phone to your computer or download ringtones and pictures to your cell phone, and less expensive than buying a data transfer cable.

Instructions

1. Activate Bluetooth on your computer. If your computer doesn't have Bluetooth technology built-in, purchase a Bluetooth adapter and plug it into the USB port. Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Hardware and Sound" and then click "Bluetooth Devices." On the "Options" tab, check "Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer." Also check "Alert me when a new Bluetooth device wants to connect" and "Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area."

2. Activate Bluetooth on your cell phone and set discovery on. Check your cell phone manual for the exact steps for this. As a general guide, you will usually find Bluetooth activation under the Settings or Applications menu.

3. Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in the computer system tray and select "Add a Bluetooth Device." Check the box "My device is set up and ready to be found." After the wizard has found your cell phone, select it to confirm. When prompted for a passkey, click the box "Let me choose my own passkey," and enter any four digits. Enter the same passkey on your phone keypad when prompted.

4. Send a file from your PC. Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in your system tray and select "Send a File." Confirm the destination device or click on the "Browse" button to search for it. Click "Next," then click "Browse" to open Windows Explorer. Find the file you want to send, click on it to select it and click "Next" to start the file transfer. Click "Finish" to close the connection.

5. Send a file from your cell phone. Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray and select "Receive a File." Locate the file on your cell phone and select the option to send it via Bluetooth. Choose your computer as the destination device. Click on the notification on your computer to accept the transfer, and under "Allow access" check "For the current request only." When the transfer has completed, click on the notification to open the receiving folder.
