Troubleshoot A T61 Touchpad Not Working

Troubleshoot a T61 Touchpad Not Working

The IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad series laptop is installed with a touchpad below the keyboard for screen navigation, in addition to the pointing stick on the keyboard for which it is famous. A software conflict in controlling the pointing devices can occur when an external mouse is connected to the T61. If no other external pointing devices are connecting to your T61, the "Enable" option for the touchpad may be turned off, making it still unresponsive. Troubleshooting a non-working Thinkpad T61 touchpad is easy.

Instructions

Using the "Fn" and "F8" Keys

1. Attach the mouse to your T61 before disabling the touchpad if you don't want to use the pointing stick on the keyboard. This enables you to navigate on the screen while the touchpad is disabled.

2. Press the "Fn" and "F8" keys simultaneously when Windows is operating. This opens the UltraNav control panel for the T61's touchpad.

3. Uncheck the "Enable" box on the UltraNav window to disable the touchpad.

4. Click "OK" at the bottom of the UltraNav window to confirm your option. Close all other windows.

5. Re-enable your touchpad by ticking the "Enable" box on the "UltraNav" window and click "OK." Disconnecting the external mouse will help prevent interference with the T61's touchpad.

Access via the System Tray

6. Right-click the touchpad icon in the system tray at the bottom of your screen.

7. Click "Pointing Device Properties" on the drop-down list.

8. Click the "Buttons" tab and click "Disable Touchpad Buttons" or "Enable Touchpad Buttons."

9. Put a checkmark in the "Disable Touchpad/Stick When a USB Pointing Device Is Present" box or "Use Touchpad/Stick Simultaneously With a Mouse."

10. Click "OK," then "Apply" to confirm the changes.
