A Jetdirect Printer

Add a JetDirect Printer

Easy network printer sharing is possible using JetDirect printer technology, a technology developed by Hewlett Packard that allows you to print from any computer on the network without having a designated computer as the print server. This simplifies your printer sharing capability and allows you to connect your printer directly to your router instead of to a computer on the network. Adding a JetDirect printer can be as simple as connecting the hardware and installing the necessary printer software.

Instructions

Add Printer Using HP Software

1. Connect the printer to your LAN by plugging a standard Ethernet cable into the network port on your JetDirect printer. Plug the cable into one of the numbered ports on your router. Turn the printer on.

2. Ensure that your computer is part of the LAN by clicking on "Start," selecting "Settings" and clicking on "Network Connections." Search for "Local Area Network" and ensure that there is not a red "X" near it.

3. Insert the JetDirect CD-ROM into any computer on the network and wait for the setup file to start. If the setup file does not launch automatically, open the file manually by clicking on "Start" and selecting "Computer." Right-click on the appropriate CD drive and select "Explore." Locate the "setup.exe" file in the root directory of the CD and double-click it.

4. Click on "Install" and follow the on-screen prompts to install the JetDirect printer on the network. Open a document and print a test page to ensure that the connection works.

Add Printer Manually

5. Connect the printer to your LAN by plugging a standard Ethernet cable into the network port on your JetDirect printer. Plug the other end of the cable into one of the numbered ports on your router. Turn the printer on.

6. Ensure that your computer is part of the LAN by clicking on "Start," selecting "Settings" and clicking on "Network Connections." Search for "Local Area Network" and ensure that there is not a red "X" near it.

7. Press "Menu" on the printer and choose "Information." Select the "Printer Configuration" option. Wait for the test page to print. Locate the "TCP/IP" section on the page and make note of the number. The number should look like "192.168.X.X", where "X" is replaced by numbers specific to your printer.

8. Open the browser of your choice on a computer that connects to the network and input the IP address that you noted earlier into the address bar. Press "Enter."

9. Select the "Networking" tab and then the "TCP/IP" tab. Click on the drop-down box and select "Manual" as the IP configuration method. Input the IP address that you noted earlier into the "IP Address" field. Click on "Apply." Close the browser.

10. Click on "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click on the "Printers" icon. Click on "Add a printer" to launch the "Add Printer Wizard."

11. Click on "Next" and select "Add a local printer." Choose "Create a new port" and click the drop-down box and select "Standard TCP/IP Port." Click "Next" and select "TCP/IP Device" as the device type. Input the IP address that you noted earlier. The "Port name" field will automatically populate. Click "Next."

12. Wait while the wizard detects the printer. Click on "Finish" and then install printer drivers by choosing the printer model from the supplied list and clicking "Next." Name the printer if you choose and select the option for "Yes" if you want the printer to be a default printer. Click "Next." Select "Yes" to print a test page and then click "Finish."
