Set Up A Westell Router

Set Up a Westell Router

The Westell Router is actually a DSL modem and router in one combo device. DSL stands for digital subscriber line and it converts data over phone lines to high-speed Internet. Normally with a DSL modem, you can only connect one person at a time. However, the Westell router allows you to connect up to four different users at a time. If you use a Westell wireless router, you can connect more users wirelessly.

Instructions

1. Connect the phone line from the wall jack to the DSL jack on the back of the router.

2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the computer to one of the four LAN ports on the back of the router. If you are using a wired connection, you can stop here.

3. Open a web browser and go to "192.168.1.1", then type in "admin" as the user name and "password" as the password. Click "OK."

4. Click on "Wireless Settings" in the top menu, then click on "Basic Security Settings" in the left menu.

5. Click the option to turn wireless "On," then type in a new network name next to "SSID."

6. Click on the option to turn WEP on if you want to use WEP, then select an encryption type and enter the wireless key. Click "Apply."

7. Click on "Advanced Security Settings" in the left menu.

8. Keep WEP or if you want, select "WPA," then in the next screen enter the WPA key and click "Apply."

9. Click on "SSID Broadcast," then click on "Disable" and click "Apply." This will stop random strangers from being able to see and potentially hack into your wireless network.
