Use A Smart Phone As A Webcam

Turning your smart phone into a webcam is rather simple.

A smart phone is a versatile tool that allows you to surf the Internet, check e-mails, take pictures and make videos. If you have the right tools, you can also transform it into a webcam. This means that you will also be able to use your smart phone for video chatting. This can save you the hassle of having to bring along a webcam and will also spare you the expense of having to purchase another gadget.

Instructions

1. Find an application that will convert your smart phone to a webcam. Three that you can choose from include Qik, Mobiola and WebCam Plus. (See resources.) These range in price from free to about $30.

2. Get Qik. This application is free to use. Go to the website (at qik.com) and register by providing your cell phone number, primary e-mail address and user name. This web-based program connects you to social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Blogger. There is nothing to install, but you will need a cable to connect your cell phone to your PC. Once you have done this, simply launch the chat application and it will use your smart phone as a webcam.

3. Purchase Mobiola. This program costs about $25 and comes with a seven-day free trial. This program can be used with smart phones including Nokias Blackberries and any phone using Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems. You can connect to your PC using a USB cable, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Once you've installed the software on both your smart phone and your computer, it will allow you to use popular chat programs like ICQ, Live Messenger and Skype to do video chatting.

4. Get Webcam plus. This program costs about $6. It works on most smart phones including Nokias and Blackberries. You will need a USB cable to connect to your computer. You can use popular messenger services such as Skype, MSN Chat, AOL Messenger and ICQ with this program.
