Add Aim Users To Skype

One way to get the most out of Internet-based calling solution Skype is to import contacts from other services and websites you use into the program, which allows you to make free text, voice and video calls to them. As of May 2011, AOL Instant Messenger isn't among the services that allows you to import contacts into Skype.

Reasons for Importing

Several reasons exist for wanting to import contacts from programs like AIM to Skype, namely that Skype that offers capabilities several other similar programs don't. In the case of AIM, it isn't possible to send a voice or video chat to another. Additionally, Skype's mobile application allows you to make free voice -- and, depending on your device, video -- calls to other online users, regardless of geographical location, affording you convenience that AIM simply doesn't.

Import Function

Importing contacts into your Skype list is simple. After logging in to your Skype account, click the "Contacts" drop-down menu and select "Import Contacts." Doing so brings up a list of websites and services that allow you to import contacts into Skype. Input your credentials -- don't worry, Skype doesn't share them -- and click "Import Contacts" to cross-reference users from other accounts that use Skype. You can individually select users you want to add -- you don't have to add them all.

Import Options

As of June 2011, AIM isn't listed among the websites and services that allow you to import contacts to Skype, which include Facebook and Hotmail. Other options listed along the top of the main "Import Contacts" page are Gmail, MSN, rediff and mail.ru. You can see additional options by clicking the "Other" button, located along the far right side of the "Import Contacts" window.

Workarounds

Although you can't directly import contacts from AIM to Skype, several methods exist to facilitate you adding your AIM contacts to Skype. The most direct way to achieve this is by messaging AIM contacts you want to add to Skype and either telling them your Skype name or asking for theirs. Alternatively, use Facebook's "Import Feature" and import your AIM contacts to Facebook. Then, use Skype's "Import Contacts" feature with your Facebook account, which cross references not only the AIM friends you imported to Facebook, but your entire list of Facebook contacts.
