Hook Up A Security System Using A Mobile Phone

Turn your cell phone into a home security system.

Using a mobile phone equipped with digital video recorder, a piece of software and the Internet, you can easily devise your own security system, complete with motion detection. This will allow you to keep tabs on what's going on at your home or office from anywhere in the world. You can even set it up with motion detection so that you won't have to sort through hours of boring video feed with nothing on it. Best of all, you can set this up for very little cost.

Instructions

1. Choose a software program that will convert your mobile phone into a Web cam. A few worth considering are Webcam Plus, Qik or Mobiola (see Resource links). As of 2010, these programs range in price from free to $24.95

2. Download and install the program that you have chosen to both your phone and computer, and restart both of them.

3. Select a Web cam home security program. A few that you can choose from include Yawcam, Yoics and GoToCamera. These programs broadcast the video feed from your camera to a password protected website that you can check from anywhere in the world. As of 2010, these programs are free to use, but some may require you to register.

4. Download and install the software to your computer. The setup wizard will help you to configure the program. When you get to the end of the process, select "Enable Motion Detection." Type in an email address and a mobile phone number where a text message can be sent.

5. Go to the "Menu" on your phone and open up the Web cam application. Set your mobile phone in the area that you wish to monitor. When the camera in your phone detects motion in this area, it will send you an email or text message. It then uploads the video to the website where you registered. To see what is going on log on to the website where you registered.
