Create A Ringtone For Iphone In Itunes

Create a Ringtone for iPhone in iTunes

You can purchase ringtones from your favorite artists from the iTunes store. However, it is also possible to create your own ringtones from music files that are already stored in your iTunes library. Since ringtones can only be a maximum of 40 seconds, you'll have to trim the length of your music file in order to create a ringtone. This entire process can be completed with iTunes without the aid of any other software.

Instructions

1. Open iTunes on your computer. Once iTunes has loaded, open the "Preferences" menu by clicking "File" and then "Preferences."

2. Change your "Import Settings" by clicking the "General" tab at the top of the screen. Then click "Import Settings." Click the "Import Using" drop-down menu and select "AAC." Click "OK" to save your settings. You'll to be able to convert files into the AAC format to create ringtones.

3. Click "Library" in the left pane of iTunes and find a song you want to convert into a ringtone. Listen to the song and find up to 40 seconds of music within the song to turn into a ringtone. Write the start time and end time of that clip of music. You'll need those times in a later step.

4. Right-click the song you want to convert into a ringtone and select "Get Info."

5. Click the "Options" tab at the top of the "Get Info" window.

6. Select the check boxes next to "Start Time" and "End Time." After you have selected these boxes, enter the start time and end time in each corresponding box. Use the format "Minute:Second." For example, "1:14" would indicate a time of 1 minute and 14 seconds. Click "OK" at the bottom of the menu to save your settings.

7. Right-click the song again and select "Create AAC Version." This creates a duplicate file of the song containing only the start time and end time that you previously indicated. You should see a duplicate file name with a shorter play time.

8. Navigate to the folder where the music file you've created is located. Right-click the file and select "Show in Windows Explorer." If you're on a Mac, select "Show in Finder." A new window opens and the music file is highlighted.

9. Right-click the file in the new window that appeared and select "Rename." If you're on a Mac, select "Get Info." Change the file extension on the file from ".m4a" to ".m4r."

10. Drag the newly named file back into iTunes. It automatically is placed in the "Ringtones" section of iTunes. Click "Ringtones" in the left column of iTunes and your ringtone should be there.
