Unlist A Cell Phone

You can remove your cell phone number from marketing lists.

Cell phones are not listed in a comprehensive directory like land lines, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the law prevents most telemarketing calls to cellular lines. Your cell number can still end up on marketing lists if it is unprotected. You can get it removed if you know the procedure. Marketers must honor your request if you phrase it in the proper way. Otherwise the list might be sold and the annoying calls will multiply.

Instructions

1. Add your cell phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry. Telemarketers are not supposed to call cell phones with automatic dialers, according to the FTC, even if the number is not on the do not call list. Registering your cell phone gives you extra protection because it protects you from all types of marketing calls.

2. Answer your cell phone if a telemarketer calls. Some people ignore calls from unknown numbers to avoid wasting paid minutes. Marketers usually continue calling if they don't get a response. You can only get your number unlisted if you answer the phone and speak to the caller.

3. Tell the telemarketer to remove your number from the company's call list, the FTC advises. Use those exact words because many companies will keep calling if you just say you're not interested or do not specifically request removal. Let the caller know it is a cell phone number, which cannot legally be called by an automatic dialer without your permission.

4. Call your bank, credit card companies and other businesses that have your cell phone number and tell them you do not want it to be placed on their marketing lists. They are allowed to call current and recent customers if you have provided your number unless you specifically tell them to remove it from their lists.
