Bluetooth technology, developed 10 years ago, allows devices to transmit voice and data with one another wirelessly over low-frequency radio waves. With the use of Bluetooth headsets, cell phone users can communicate hands-free. In addition, this technology has the power to connect cell phones, PDAs, computers, speakers, printers and other devices.
Function
To begin using a Bluetooth headset with a cell phone, the two devices must be paired. Initially, this process usually requires the use of a PIN number or pass code for security purposes. After the devices have connected, they are able to exchange information.
Identification
There are different versions of Bluetooth, so users must ensure that the devices they are trying to pair are compatible. Features include voice dialing, mute selection and last-number redial. With more recent versions, greater security, lower power consumption and faster transmission speeds are available.
Types
There are many different models and styles of Bluetooth headsets, which, like cell phones, must be charged on a regular basis. Some models are made with a small boom microphone that extends from the headset toward the mouth. Others are made without the separate extended microphone and, as a result, are smaller. There are some that have a small LCD screen that functions as a caller ID display. Although the most common devices are mono, there are also stereo Bluetooth headsets, which resemble typical headphones. These come in handy when using the phone's music player.
History
The name Bluetooth comes from a 10th-century Danish King named Harold Blatand, who helped unify the nations of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Not only does the name Blatand translate to "Bluetooth" in English, the product unites different types of technology and electronics.
Considerations
Some manufacturers have three modes of Bluetooth security: nonsecure, service level-enforced security and link-level enforced security. For others, there are two levels; trusted device and nontrusted device. Bluetooth also has 128-bit encryption.
Benefits
In addition to functioning in cell phones, computers and computer accessories, Bluetooth has other capabilities. This technology is also used in automobiles and medical devices. Beyond the high functionality of Bluetooth devices, there are other benefits that make this technology so popular. It is simple, inexpensive, the devices are small and its power consumption is low.
