What Is Nero Sipps

Nero SIPPS allows users to make voice calls.

Self-described as "the Internet phone solution," Nero SIPPS offers voice calling over the Internet. SIPPS comes in two versions, with a variety of calling features available for both.

Features

SIPPS includes support for webcams and video conferencing, both with a limit of three parties per conversation. SIPPS can record calls, call other SIPPS users or call traditional phone numbers. It can keep track of contacts, send text messages and it includes a voice mail feature for recording messages.

Versions

SIPPS comes in two versions, a fully featured retail version and a free version with a reduced feature set. The free version allows only voice calls between other SIPPS users and lacks most other features of the full version.

Types of Calls

Both the free version and the retail product allow users to place calls to other SIPPS users for no charge, as long as the computer has an Internet connection. Placing calls from SIPPS to a traditional phone requires a monthly subscription fee.

Availability

The Nero website no longer offers SIPPS for sale, though online retailers still provide boxed copies. Mirror websites also host download links for the free version.

System Requirements

SIPPS requires a computer running Windows 2000 or later, in addition to DirectX 9 or newer. Other requirements include a 400 Mhz processor, 128 MB of RAM, 40 MB of free hard drive space, 64 MB of video memory and an Internet connection. Sending and receiving calls also requires a sound card, microphone and a headset or speaker system. SIPPS works with USB webcams.

Alternatives

Other Internet calling programs offer features similar to SIPPS. Skype and Gizmo5 both allow free calls between other users of the software, with additional calling options for fees. Other programs, such as Ventrilo and Teamspeak, do not support calls to traditional phones.
