Get The Mac Address From A Laptop

The MAC address--also known as the Media Access Control address--is used to identify your computer on a network. This way your network administrator will know who to blame if you are downloading illegal files to your computer. If you have been asked to find this number on your computer, it can be a bit confusing unless you know exactly where to look. So here are some simple directions on get the MAC address from a laptop.


Instructions


1. Go to the Start Menu. If you are using most versions of windows then you will click on "Run." However if you are using Vista you will use the box titled "Start Search."


2. Enter "CMD" in the box and you will get a black window for DOS. Type in the command "ipconfig/all" at the DOS prompt. If you are using Windows XP you can type in "GetMac."


3. Get your MAC address. Your MAC address will be the one next to "Physical Address" it will be six groups of letters and numbers that look like this


00-XX-XX-XX-00-XX.


4. Get your MAC on your Macintosh. Getting your MAC address is different on Apple computers. To do this open your "System Preferences." This is usually found on your program dock. Then select "network" and pick the location that you want, such as home or work. Under the drop down box for "Show" select "Built in Ethernet." Click on "Ethernet" and your Mac address is the one labeled "Ethernet ID"
