Fix Up & Down Keys On A Nokia 5300

The Nokia 5300 blends phone functionality with musical enjoyment. Unfortunately, problems can develop over time that interfere with your ability to adequately control music or conversation volume using the hardwired keys on the phone's surface. Thankfully, some easy steps can be taken to restore functionality without having to call technical support.

Instructions

1. Clean out the grooves around the volume keys with a toothpick or needle. Using the tip, gently scrape any dirt, pocket lint and built-up skin oils from the crevices. If you hold the instrument at a slight angle, you may even be able to clean underneath the lip of each button. Be careful not to use too much force, as you could break off the button. Once this is done, test whether the keys are working normally.

2. Perform a soft reset on your Nokia 5300 if the issue is still present. Software malfunctions may be at work if cleaning the keys did not restore functionality. To do this, press "*#7380#" from the home screen. The phone will reset to its factory standard configuration and then turn off and back on automatically. When the phone has reloaded, test for resolution.

3. Perform a hard reset if the volume keys still do not function correctly. This will completely erase all information and install a new version of the operating system. Do this by entering in "*#7370#" from the home screen and then pressing "Yes." It will take the device a couple of minutes to complete the reset and reload. Test the functionality of the volume keys once more.

4. Contact your carrier to discuss your options for repairing or replacing your Nokia 5300. Unfortunately, if the keys still do not operate correctly, it is likely due to an internal hardware issue that cannot be fixed by the common end-user.
