Reflash Bios

Reflash BIOS

Reflashing the BIOS, or basic input/output system, is an important thing to consider if you want your computer to support all of the latest hardware and software changes. Every motherboard manufacturer updates its BIOS version on a regular basis, and you can freely download the latest update right from your motherboard manufacturer's website. Reflashing the BIOS using a floppy disk or the WinFlash utility program is the easiest and most widely used method.

Instructions

Reflash Using a Floppy Disk

1. Visit your motherboard manufacturer's website and use your motherboard's chipset number to download the latest BIOS update executable file for your motherboard. The motherboard chipset number can be found on the motherboard packaging or the motherboard driver CD.

2. Restart your computer. Press the "Delete" key to enter the BIOS setup. Press the "Ctrl" and "F1" keys together to display the advanced BIOS options.

3. Use the arrow keys to highlight the option labeled "Advanced BIOS Features" and press the "Enter" key. Select the option labeled "First Boot Device" and press "Enter." Select "Floppy" and press "Enter."

4. Press the "Esc" key to go back to the BIOS main menu. Select "Save Settings and Exit" and press the "Enter" key twice. Your computer will automatically restart.

5. Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy-disk drive. Go to "My Computer" and right-click on the floppy disk icon. Select "Format" from the drop-down menu and click "OK" to format the floppy disk.

6. Copy the BIOS update file that you downloaded from the manufacturer's website onto the floppy disk.

7. Restart your computer and allow it to boot from the floppy disk. This will cause the BIOS to be reflashed automatically.

Reflash Using WinFlash

8. Visit your motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest WinFlash BIOS executable file for your motherboard along with the WinFlash utility program. You can also download WinFlash from third-party sites (see Resources).

9. Install the WinFlash utility program by double-clicking on the setup file from the location where you saved it. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the WinFlash installation.

10. Run WinFlash by clicking on "Start," "All Programs" and "WinFlash." Click "File" on the top of the WinFlash window and select "Open" from the drop-down menu. Browse to the location of the hard drive where you saved the BIOS executable file and click on it. Click "Open" to continue.

11. Click the "Update BIOS now" icon next to the "Save" icon at the top of the WinFlash window. Click "No" on the message box that shows up.

12. Click "Update" on the "Update BIOS" dialog box. WinFlash will automatically start to reflash the BIOS. Do not shut down or close WinFlash while this happens. Click "Yes" on the message box that prompts you to restart your computer.
