Connect An Iphone To Wifi To Use As A Phone

Apple's iPhone has a built-in wireless adapter, which means you can take advantage of the device's Internet connectivity regardless of whether you have an active service plan and even if you don't have a SIM card installed in the phone. Download and install Web-based calling applications -- two examples are Skype and Google Voice -- to use your iPhone over Wi-Fi to make phone calls.

Instructions

1. Connect your iPhone to the Internet. Tap "Settings" and then tap "Wi-Fi." Tap the name of an available wireless network. Enter a password if you are prompted for one and tap "Join."

2. Download a calling application such as Skype or Google Voice. Tap "AppStore" and type the name of the app you want to download in the search field. Tap the "Install" button to the right of the app that you want to install. Wait for the download to complete.

3. Tap the icon of the newly installed calling application. Tap the "Call" button to make a phone call. Some iPhone apps, such as Skype, require you to purchase credits in your account to make phone calls; others, such as Google Voice, are free when used for domestic calls.
