What Does At&T Use Imei Codes For

The iPhone was first released to AT&T.

Each phone on the AT&T network has its own International Mobile Equipment Identity number. The 15-digit code is located under the battery on your phone, and AT&T uses the number for several important reasons. Chiefly, the IMEI number links your personal cell phone to your AT&T customer account and bill.

Identifying Phone

The IMEI number on your cellphone has several specific uses, but the overall purpose of the code is to enable AT&T to identify your exact device. Each cellphone has a unique IMEI number, so when you supply the code to AT&T for any reason, the provider knows which phone you are getting service for. If you are a current customer, the IMEI number is also linked to your AT&T account.

Programming New SIM Card

AT&T customers can order a new SIM card online or in person for an existing phone, provided the phone is compatible with AT&T service. When you are buying a new SIM card, the company asks that you provide the IMEI number. Supplying the IMEI on your phone lets AT&T link the IMEI to the new SIM card; a SIM card holds your phone number and AT&T rate plan information. This process lets AT&T know who is currently using the phone.

Attaching New Phone to Account

Chances are, you won't have the same cellphone for the life of your AT&T service. If you purchase a new phone, AT&T must know the IMEI number on your new device to link it with your current account. If you are buying your new phone online, the company sends you a link to an IMEI/SIM website, where you can enter the IMEI number for the phone along with your SIM card number.

Giving Out Rebates

If AT&T is offering a rebate for a particular style of phone, the company wants to make sure that only one rebate goes out per device. The most commonly used proof of purchase is a label from your new phone's box. If you throw away the box by accident, AT&T will accept a photocopy of the IMEI number as a substitute for the label.
