Most MP3 players have brand-specific chargers that only fit into that type of MP3 player. Some have mini-USB ports just like many cell phone chargers. However, just because the cell phone charger fits with the MP3 player doesn't mean it can be used to charge the device.
Amps
Each charger has a maximum amount of power it can supply; that number is referred to as the amps. Each MP3 player requires a certain amount of amps in order to charge. If the MP3 needs more than the charger can handle, it will not charge.
Volts
The volts are the max amount of energy the charger gives, and each mp3 player requires a certain amount of volts to fully charge. Compare the charger with the mp3 player to see if the volts match. If not, the charger might not charge at all or might burn out completely.
Universal Chargers
Companies like iGo have developed universal chargers. These chargers regulate how much power and energy each individual device needs in order to charge and sends only that amount. Tips can be purchased for many different styles of cell phones and MP3 players.
