Fix Electric Windows In A Car

Save money by fixing your car's electric windows.

You can fix your power window systems and save money. If you test the motor, you can determine whether you have to replace a switch or fuse or fix a more serious problem. The switch may be dirty or stuck and a simple fix will cost you nothing. If the electric motor is not getting power, you can rectify that problem by checking the fuse box and wiring.

Instructions

1. Check to see if you have to replace a fuse or repair faulty wiring. Check the switches as well; they may be stuck and need to be cleaned. In such cases, you can put a few drops of rubbing alcohol or contact lens cleaner into the switches. If the problem requires replacement of the regulator, continue with the following steps.

2. Remove the window switch panel. Be aware that some vehicles don't have a switch panel because it is built into the door panel.

3. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the window switch connector.

4. Remove the door panel mounting bolts, along with all plastic access panels and screw hole covers. To have access to the bolts, you may have to lower the window. Depending on your car's make, the door panels may have plastic push-style fasteners. After removing all door panel fasteners, disconnect all wiring, gently pull up or out on the panel and remove the regulator.

5. Replace the regulator with a new unit purchased from a parts supplier or online.

6. Tighten the bolts to secure the new regulator and make sure all wires are carefully placed back inside the door. Once everything is secured, reassemble the door panel.

7. Check the installation by pressing the power window switch. If this still doesn't solve the problem, check the troubleshooting guide in your owner's manual or bring your car to your dealer or an auto repair shop.
