Does The Garmin Mobile Xt Need To Connect To The Internet

The Garmin Mobile application requires a data plan.

The Garmin Mobile XT (a version of the Garmin Mobile Blackberry and smartphone application) utilizes a data connection to triangulate location, pull traffic data, and locate points of interest. In order to effectively use the application, you must sign up for a data plan with the cell service provider or face large costs from Garmin Mobile's constant data pings.

Compatible Phones

Garmin Mobile is compatible only with a selection of smartphones and Blackberry phones. The Blackberry version is not carrier-specific; all other devices are linked to one of two carriers.

Data Usage

The application requires data for the following features: Google Local Search, navigation and Garmin Online. Garmin online provides weather, traffic, flight, and fuel data.

Comparable Products

Most cellular navigation services require a data plan in conjunction with a smartphone or Blackberry. Some cellular carriers offer---for a higher monthly fee---a proprietary navigation service that does not require a data plan.
